Knee Injections – Why Stem Cells Are the Answer

Scott Brandt, M.D. Knee Replacement Alternative, Stem Cell Therapy, Stem Cells for Joint & Soft Tissue Pain, Stem Cells for Knee

ThriveMD is Colorado’s leading stem cell therapy for knee pain clinic. We have facilities in Vail and Denver, and we have a long history of working with patients on various joint and muscle issues. Severe knee pain, caused by injuries or wear and tear from activities such as golf or skiing, is one of the most common conditions we treat. Stem cell knee injections are becoming a popular way to address both acute and chronic knee pain.

Are You a Good Candidate for Stem Cell Knee Injections?

Knee pain is one of the most common reasons patients seek out a consultation with their regular doctor or an orthopedic surgeon. Rest, ice, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy are typical first-line treatments for this condition. If these conservative therapies prove unsuccessful, which is often the case, you could be a good candidate for a stem cell knee injection.

Short-Term Pain Relief with Common Knee Injections

Some doctors may initially use corticosteroid medications to decrease inflammation when swelling occurs around the knee. The good news is this treatment will often greatly reduce knee pain –– at least for a while. In addition, medical professionals may use hyaluronic acid compounds to lubricate the joint space in the knee in order to reduce the day-to-day wear and tear on the joint. Unfortunately, neither of these injections improve the cartilage structure and often offer only short-term improvements in pain and knee function.

On the other hand, adult stem cells harvested from one’s own body can act to reduce inflammation, diminish ongoing breakdown of the joint surfaces, and –– most importantly  –– may produce new cartilage leading to lasting knee repair. Only stem cell therapy has the potential to heal damaged tissue in this way.

By combining A2M with our current groundbreaking stem cell therapies, our team is capable of not only building new soft tissue, cartilage and tendon, but halting the degenerative arthritic process and further protecting the treated joint through a simple injection to the knee. Note, we also offer similar stem cell injections for back pain.

Addressing Knee Pain with Adult Stem Cells

Adult stem cells are found in two primary locations: adipose (fat) tissue and bone marrow. The richest source of these cells are found in adipose tissue and to a much lesser degree in bone marrow. Additionally, these stem cells carry no risk of rejection or transference of disease because they are harvested from the patient’s own body. At ThriveMD, we typically use a combination of both adipose cell and bone marrow concentrate in order to maximize the healing potential.

Stem cell therapy is a minimally invasive procedure that can be carried out in 2-3 hours and have you back in action within several weeks.

Should You Wait Until You Need a Knee Replacement?

Many patients talk about delaying a stem cell procedure until they are in need of a knee replacement; yet, this is far from ideal. While it’s true that stem cells may help avoid or delay the need for joint replacement, it is preferable to start treating knee pain well before joint replacement is needed. Treating the joint during the early stages of knee arthritis will provide the best chance of keeping the joint well-tuned and functioning into the later years of life.
