What Is The Galleri Blood Test?
First launched in 2021, the Galleri blood test is a multi-cancer early detection (MCED) test that can detect more than 50 types of cancer with a single blood draw. Some of the most common cancers that Galleri can detect include the following cancers, which in the past were typically found as late-stage diagnoses:
- Breast cancer
- Leukemia
- Pancreatic cancer
- Lung cancer
- Cervical cancer
- Rectal cancer
The Galleri blood test works by detecting evidence of cancer DNA in the blood. Many types of cancers shed pieces of DNA in the bloodstream very early in their existence. These DNA markers are small identifiable pieces of a cancer cell and indicate that cancer is (or was) present in the body. The Galleri blood test allows physicians the potential to identify the presence of a cancer very early in its existence and then gather evidence to determine where the cancer may have originated.
How Accurate Is The Galleri Blood Test?
Even though the Galleri test can detect 50+ types of cancer, there are just two potential outcomes when you get the results: cancer DNA was detected, or no cancer DNA was detected. If cancer DNA was detected after your Galleri test, this is not a guarantee that you have cancer. That said, research indicates that a positive cancer DNA result predicts the presence of cancer with 90% accuracy. For this reason, ThriveMD will typically use the Galleri blood test as an initial cancer screen. If a positive result is returned, more specific testing, either at ThriveMD or a specialist, is then required to further locate and identify the specifics of the cancer.
Do I Need a Galleri Blood Test?
Galleri blood test is currently available at specialized select medical offices. While it’s always a good idea to be proactive about your health, the Galleri blood test is not recommended for everyone. If you’re over the age of 50 or at high risk of cancer, you should speak with one of our physicians about getting the Galleri blood test.
