The Difficult Problem of Back Pain
Deborah is a 42 year old Vail Valley female who was in otherwise good health aside from her persistent low back pain from degenerative discs. She underwent a microdiscectomy at L4-5 in 2009 which relieved her right sided sciatic pain, but did little for her ongoing central back pain. Facet injections at L4-S1 did little to minimize her central back pain. She spent several months working with a physical therapist treating both core stabilization as well as mobility and flexibility.
Again this did little to diminish the pain in her low central back. She additionally underwent fluoroscopically guided corticosteroid selective epidural injections bilaterally at L4-5 with modest short term improvement. After stem cell treatment for back pain she was able to return to golf and skiing with minimal pain.
Relieving Back Pain with Stem Cell Therapy
Deborah eventually underwent a diagnostic discogram in April of 2014 with a marked low volume positive response at L4-5 and mild positive response at L5-S1. We discussed the potential of a combined fat derived stem cell and bone marrow concentrate injection into the two painful discs. The patient decided to undergo the procedure in May of 2014. As per our protocol and included in the pricing, she underwent a booster of bone marrow concentrate 5 weeks after the initial procedure.

Stem Cell Treatment for Back Pain Results
During a follow-up 8 weeks after the initial stem cell procedure, the patient reported dramatic improvements in flexibility and muscle spasm – she reported a 60%* decrease in pain scores at that time. During a follow-up at 90 days post-op, Deborah noted a 90%* improvement in her pain and additional improvements in flexibility. At that time, Deborah returned to full physical activity including playing golf five days a week.
She skied 35 days this ski season and has once again resumed golfing this spring. She trains twice weekly with a personal trainer and does an aerobic workout on an elliptical machine 2-3 times a week as well. She continues to report pain levels that have remained 90%* improved over her pre-treatment baseline. She states that she can hardly remember a time that her back has been this comfortable prior to her stem cell procedure.
